What do I mean by that? It is a bare-bones instrument that does not allow the player to hide behind anything. It is unlike the electric guitar which can take advantage of effects and distortion. Those effects offer the guitar player some room for sloppy technique. The acoustic guitar, on the other hand, is what it is. If the musician misses a note or their technique is not clean, it is very noticeable.

With its softer tone, not only is the skill of the guitar player tested, but it is also crucial for the lyrics and vocals of the song to be great as well. These elements combined is what truly makes a great acoustic guitar song.

With that in mind I have come up with a small list of what I feel are some of the best acoustic guitar songs. Some simple, some a lot more difficult, but all deserve to be determined one of the best acoustic guitar songs.

1. Butterfly – By Weezer. Beginning off the list is one of my favorite songs of all time. “Butterfly” by the geek rock group Weezer is simple, yet amazing. Off of their second album (and some would say their best) “Pinkerton”, the band was able to take a simply chord transition, a beautiful melody, and heartbreaking lyrics to craft and melancholy breakup song about lost love. Again the music is simple, but it is well deserving to make this list.

2. Sweet Baby James – By James Taylor. I think most people would agree that “Sweet Baby James” is clearly one the best acoustic guitar songs of all times. Off of his second album of the same name, James Taylor, favorite singer/songwriter wrote this haunting tune while driving to meet his baby nephew for the first time. The finger picking technique used on this track is difficult and involved, yet flows so beautifully through out. With his extraordinary voice, extraordinary guitar playing, and his knack for writing hits, James Taylor hit the nail right on the head with this one.

3. St. Augustine – By Band of Horses. This song appears on the debut album of Band of Horses, an indie band that released the album in 2006. The acoustic guitar work is excellent for the song, a leveled compound of strumming and plucking, and the lyrics are boarder-line mind-blowing. But what makes this song worthy to be mentioned on the list of best acoustic guitar songs is the harmony of the two vocalists. It is subtle, but it is there, and it was what in fact sets this song apart.

4. Tears in Heaven – By Eric Clapton. Not much needs to be said when the name Eric Clapton is mentioned. The man is a guitar and music legend. Most known for his blues and electric guitar, however his acoustic guitar skills are rarely paralleled. Sadly one of his best acoustic guitar songs was written after the tragic death of his young son. Clapton put his emotions not only in his heartfelt lyrics, but also into the acoustic guitar part of the song. It is masterfully finger picked by Clapton and the melody almost all the time brings a tear to the listeners eye. That is why it earned a spot on this list.

Though this list is short, in general because it could go on forever, it in fact captures the depth of what can be done with an acoustic guitar when played properly.

Care of Western Red Cedar Outdoor Furniture

So, you purchased Western Red Cedar (Wrc) outdoor furniture and got it home. You place it in that exquisite spot you had in mind and it looks beautiful and elegant. But then what? Do you let it age naturally; changing to silver gray? If so, should you do anything to care for it? Or do you want to keep it looking like it did when you brought it home?

Western Red Cedar requires very minimal care if allowed to age naturally. Just hand wash it with a mild soap and water a concentrate of times a year. Also, make sure the hardware is tightened and not rusting. That’s it! You don’t have to take it indoors, put it in storage or anything else. It will age to a beautiful silver gray color with a raised grain.

Western Red Cedar is a soft wood, it is best not to pressure wash it, as this may damage the wood. Some advise using steel wool or other polisher for stubborn stains. However, steel wool will leave behind tiny particles that may embed into the furniture and begin to rust. Any polisher material may damage the wood. Therefore, hand washing with a soft rag or hanger-on is the best means of washing outdoor furniture. For stubborn stains, check with your local hardware store and make sure they know you are cleaning Cedar outdoor furniture. They can advise an agent you can use on stubborn stains.

If you want to allow the natural aging process but do not wish to have a raised grain, a wood sealer can be used. If you use a sealer with Uv protection, you can protect the tones of your Wrc furniture as well. Again, your local hardware store can help you with selecting the accepted sealer.

If you prefer to keep your garden, patio and outdoor furniture looking as it did when you purchased it, there are several options available. Your local hardware store can also help you with many of these methods. However, keep in mind that it is very important they understand you are working with Cedar outdoor furniture.

Wood Sealer – wood sealers block the pores of the wood keeping dirt and moisture out. To keep the warm colors of cedar, use a sealer with ultra violet inhibitors. The wood sealer should be reapplied every year.

Paint – painting Wrc outdoor furniture is not recommended. All paint will finally blister and peel. Paint traps moisture in the wood. If you wish to convert the color of your Wrc garden, patio and outdoor furniture, reconsider staining it.

Preservative Treated – any part of Wrc furniture that will be in the ground (i.e. Arbor posts, pergola posts, fence posts, landscape ties etc.) needs to be preservative treated.

Whether you let your Wrc outdoor furniture age plainly or prefer to keep the warm color and tones at the time of purchases, it will be something you will enjoy with your family and friends for a very long time.
